MULTIPLE WHAKAPAPA, RELEVANCE, AND THE POWER OF A FOCUSED PEPEHA

Writer: ArohainaArohaina

Multiple Whakapapa

In Aotearoa today, many Tāngata Tiriti have more than one ethnic whakapapa. This richness of ancestry is a source of pride, yet when it comes to crafting a pepeha urutau, there is a natural temptation to weave all ancestral lines into a single statement. However, this approach can sometimes create confusion, both for the speaker and their audience.

A pepeha urutau is an adaptation of the traditional Māori pepeha, designed for those who do not descend from the land but still wish to introduce themselves in a way that acknowledges their cultural identity and relationship to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Given its purpose, a pepeha urutau should be clear, relevant, and meaningful to those hearing it.

Why Keep Pepeha Urutau Separate?

Instead of attempting to include every ancestral thread in a single pepeha urutau, we suggest creating distinct pepeha for each ethnicity.

This allows individuals to:

  • Honour each whakapapa fully – rather than diluting each cultural identity, this approach ensures that each heritage is acknowledged with depth and integrity.

  • Avoid complexity and confusion – a streamlined pepeha urutau is easier to deliver and easier for others to understand.

  • Choose relevance over inclusion – not every part of your whakapapa needs to be shared at every moment. Selecting the most relevant pepeha urutau for your audience strengthens connection and clarity.

Choosing the Right Pepeha for the Moment

When introducing yourself, think about the context and the people in front of you. A pepeha is not just about self-expression; it’s also about relationship-building. Using the pepeha urutau that best aligns with the audience acknowledges their perspective and enhances mutual understanding.

For example:

  • In a Māori setting, a pepeha urutau that emphasises your connection to Aotearoa and Te Tiriti o Waitangi may be most appropriate.

  • In an international context, a pepeha urutau that highlights your European, Asian, Pasifika, or other heritage might foster stronger cultural recognition.

  • In a bicultural setting, you may opt for a pepeha urutau that best reflects the shared kaupapa of the group.

Clarity, Connection, and Respect

By keeping pepeha urutau distinct, we not only respect the integrity of each whakapapa but also ensure that our introductions are meaningful and relevant. In the end, a pepeha is more than just a set of words—it is a bridge between people, a statement of belonging, and a way to uphold the relationships that define us.
